At last count, there were 16 categories of closed loop prepaid cards, including transit, health care and government. Of all the important functions that these cards provide, it is gifting that is most popular.

The in-store gift card continues to be the darling of this market, and the e-gift card is gaining in acceptance. Designed for a specific store chain or location, the closed loop gift card serves as currency and a mini-billboard for the brand; in effect, the gift card is a multi-functional promotions and sales tool.

Are you one of those cashless consumers who pulls out plastic to pay for a morning latte?

You might want to start carrying some green just in case.

Consumers could see more $5 or $10 minimum charge rules — or at least polite requests — when using credit or debit cards this year, as merchants try to cope with an unintended effect of new federal limits on how much card issuers can charge them in so-called “swipe fees.”

Those regulations already sparked an uproar when some banks tried to impose monthly debit card use fees on consumers to offset the revenue hit — only to retreat in the face of a withering backlash.

But the fallout didn’t end there.

Same-store sales seen up 3.4 percent in December

When top U.S. retailers post their December sales this week, Wall Street analysts expect them to report a healthy end to the holiday season, helped by discounts, improved consumer sentiment and tactics such as extended hours and layaways.

Some 22 major chains, from Macy's Inc and Target Corp to Costco Wholesale Corp and Gap Inc, should post an aggregate 3.4 percent increase in December sales at stores open at least a year, according to Thomson Reuters, capping a season that started moderately but gained steam in December.
